MMA
MMA’s taught with a strong BJJ emphasis by head coach, Ricardo. Setting up an opponent for a takedown, countering takedown attempts, etc.; these are the main ingredients of Ricardo’s class. Ultimately, they’re about learning how to take it down and secure a dominant position, before working a submission.
If you don’t attend the recommended strength and conditioning class – itself conducted from a practical MMA perspective – the MMA class kicks off with a vigorous workout featuring bodyweight exercises and MMA movements including ’sprawls’. Once fully warmed up, techniques are practised until each student is happy. If there’s a problem, Ricardo’s always on hand to break it down into bite size pieces.
Following a couple of techniques or so, the class usually moves on to drilling/50% sparring a number of techniques at fight pace. For example, a student would start of grappling for 3-minutes, then on to ground and pound bag work, followed by 3-minutes of takedowns/takedown defence work, before finishing off with standing bag work. This is just a typical example as each class does differ. There is the occasional bit of stand up, but for those of you who are more stand-up orientated, we recommend that you attend the Muay Thai class taken by Theo.
